Mr Jean Luc Vermeulen

President of ELF EP

Paris, May 10, 1999

Mr President,

The salaries from Pau and Paris met on Friday, May, 7 (26th day on strike), and examined the proposal you made on May, 6, when meeting the Unions and a delegation of strikers from Paris.

The salaries took notice of the advance made by the proposal:

opening of a discussion, study and negotiation phase until the beginning of June

the withdrawal of any legal procedure during this period

the return to Pau of the Study Group on Block 17 as soon as possible

However, the proposal of only a " suspension of outsourcing and displacements for the time being " let the very same threats remaining upon the salaries, without any guarantee of any type. Only firm assurances on these two points may secure the salaries and stop the present conflict.

Within your condition, discontinuing the strike as demanded cannot be accepted.

Therefore, the strikers meetings in Pau and Paris rejected almost unanimously the proposal, and maintained the strike.

The Unions hence reassert their will to meet you as soon as possible to discuss any new proposal which could emerge on one side or the other, within the five-point scheme voted by the strikers.

With best regards,
