Why & how
fr Ce texte est aussi disponible en francais

01. One of the consequences of the protest movement that took place in December 1995 has been the emergence of a new political and social practice, carried out on and through the Internet, to which many of us have made a significant contribution. Many web sites have been created, where textual and audio-visual contributions have been made freely available. This virtual activism has gone on to play its part in the emergence of the current protest movement. But how many of us can actually find our way through the sheer mass of information available. Even using a powerful search engine, it is a struggle to locate references when they are actually needed. As one of the first priorities of this action list, may we suggest that every recipient of this message should send us the addresses of any resources that they regard as essential to citizens of the Internet and to the understanding and success of the struggle being waged by the unemployed and the excluded everywhere. But please, don't just send us addresses for home pages; instead, choose links to specific texts and append a 3 or 5 line summary. All these texts, chosen by all of us, can then be made accessible via a database that can be consulted over the Web.
02. At present, the antenneassidic list is being administered manually from the altern.org server. Given the amount of work that its maintenance will probably entail over the weeks to come, any proposals for alternate hosts or for how its management may be automated will be most welcome.
03. The 800 initial recipients of this message are spread all over France, with about 100 others abroad. The usefulness of this list will depend upon there being volunteers willing to act as local and regional correspondents, so that as much information as possible can flow in both directions: from the list to groups and local associations and, of course, vice versa. In this way, the network will be real as well as virtual. So we would appreciate it if you could let us know where you are based and send us information emanating from collectives in your area. This supply of information will be collated daily and sent out to everyone. And if you can either scan cuttings from the local press, print or photocopy useful documents, make useful telephone numbers available, or make video or sound recordings of anything relevant to the movement, please make it known on the list.
04. There will be an IRC conference, which anyone who wishes to can join. This will facilitate the evolution of the project and allow people to take stock after the demonstrations planned throughout France on January 13th. This conference should open on Tuesday January 13th from 10pm. The address of the IRC channel and a technical guide will be emailed to you on Tuesday morning. Any IRC specialists are requested to come forward and help organise the event.
05. If you decide not to resign from the list, please tell us how you think you can contribute to the smooth working of the project. We are considering setting up a team of translators (French /English /, French /Spanish, French/German) for the most useful texts (including this introductory text).
06. We want as many people as possible to be able to access the information and resources available on this list and any future web site. So could you persuade cybercafes and other semi-public or even public places to make the existence of this initiative known.
07. There are many people who have no means of accessing the Web. Nevertheless, we would like them to be able to participate. Perhaps it might be possible to set up telephone lines whereby calls are recorded, converted to real audio and retransmitted over the Internet...
08. Do you have a portable computer with a modem card and mobile phone? Then no doubt you are a demon reporter, destined to participate in the spectacular actions carried out by the unemployed and to cover it in real time over the net. Come forward!
09. The list and web site may be able to take in and redistribute information in something like real time - but only if enough of us put our abilities, resources and time at the service of the current collective movement.
10. The administration of the list and site will have to be collective. Any volunteers?
11. This isn't a joke.
12. Only racists and fascists are forbidden to join in the fun. (to take up residence here)
13. Please pass this message on to anyone who might be interested.
14. To send a message to everyone subscribing to antenneassedic, send email to antenneassedic@altern.org.
15. 16. To subscribe to the list, send this message
