Meghan,

You raise a good point about the way the term "virtual" is being used. And
you rightfully suggest that we can examine the phenomena of "virtual
sit-in" abstractly without concrete reference to the Zapatistas or any
other social movement.

(Greenwich Mean Time) os 5 endereços

The Italians translated the word "ocupar" (to occupy) to the phrase
"sit-in." I added "virtual" to distinguish it from a "real sit-in" in which
people are actually present in an office or a building, physically
occupying that space. A "virtual sit-in" means people are not actually in a
space, but there collective presence is still felt.

Some purposes for a "real sit-in" are to obstruct business as usual for a
particular institution, to use that moment of the occupation as a means of
attracting attention to
a specific issue, and to demonstrate that more extreme measures and actions
are possible and necessary.

A "virtual sit-in" - speaking metaphorically - would have the same
purposes. The effect of the "netstrike" in the way that the Italians
constructed it means that these web sites would be getting thousands of
hits on their sites (the effect of pressing the reload key over and over
again)from all over the world. It is likely their sites have counters so
they would know how many hits they were getting and maybe they would be
able to see that these were coming from people all over the planet. So,
that's the first point: they would see this worldwide coordinated effort.
The impact of this is that it would disrupt "legitimate" business uses of
those 3 financial web sites. I don't think the intention is to crash the
server which may not even be possible to do by simply repeating reload
commands. But clearly this plan is designed to block or at least slow down
access for "legitimate" business uses.

These 5 sites are from among the most important financial institutions in
Mexico. The timing chosen for this Netstrike is at 10:00 a.m. in Mexico
City, when their Stock Market (Bolsa) opens. I am not aware of any "real
sit-ins" or blockades that would accompany the virtual one, but on Jan. 5 a
small group in Mexico City effectively delayed opening of the Bolsa for
close to an hour. I saw Reuters' reports of that coming from Mexico City
and then later in that day a Reuters business story on it coming out of New
York. Clearly Wall Street knew. I suspect Wall Street would know if access
to those 5 financial web sites were slowed down or cut off.
